Melbourne Parking officers - strike off

Melbourne's parking officers have been forced to call off their planned strike that was supposed to go ahead tomorrow. They will be out there issuing parking fines as per usual. So be warned!

Melbourne City Council took its parking officers to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) to stop the threatened industrial action.

Parking officers had threatened to strike tomorrow and to not book cars parked illegally. The reason for the proposed strike was unhappiness over the recent changes to the council policy on working outdoors in hot weather.

The AIRC threatened the parking officers with heavy fines (which is possible under the Federal Government workplace laws) - and so the workers were forced to withdraw the strike plan.

The matter is not over, however. The Australian Industrial Relations Commission ruled that parking officers must attend compulsory arbitration with the council before they can go ahead with industrial action. It is expected that this arbitration will occur in the next month or so and there may be strikes in the new year if the issues are not adequately resolved.
