Guggenheim Collection: 1940s to Now

New York - Venice - Bilbao - Berlin

This winter gallery-goers will be treated to a rare opportunity to see masterworks by the who’s who of acclaimed artists at the most important exhibition of postwar and contemporary art ever to be held in Australia.

Following on from the success of The Impressionists, Dutch Masters and Picasso: Love & War, Guggenheim Collection: 1940s to Now comes exclusively to the National Gallery of Victoria from the Guggenheim collections of New York, Venice, Bilbao and Berlin as the fourth exhibition in the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.

Curated by the Guggenheim in collaboration with the NGV, the exhibition showcases works by internationally famous artists including Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson Pollock, Gilbert & George, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Jeff Koons, as well as many important artists whose work has never been seen in Australia.

Visitors will be taken on a journey through the evolution of art since the 1940s with iconic works from every decade to the present, viewing more than 85 works by 68 artists from 22 different nationalities. It includes a variety of media – paintings, works on paper, sculpture, photographs and video art. The stories told are sometimes overwhelming in size or in the subjects they tackle, ranging from the personal to the political to the popular.

Surround yourself in the glowing green and yellow lights of the fluorescent-lit room by Dan Flavin, walk across the metal floor piece by Carl Andre, step into Bruce Nauman’s suspended Floating Room, or select a liquorice lolly from the huge spill by Felix Gonzales-Torres.

From 30 June until 7 October at NGV International on St Kilda Road, Guggenheim Collection: 1940s to Now will represent a long list of ‘firsts’: it comes from the Guggenheim collection which has never been seen in Melbourne, includes works by artists never seen before in Melbourne, and will debut some recently acquired works that have yet to be shown by any of the Guggenheim Museums.

Tickets to Guggenheim Collection: 1940s to Now are on sale NOW!
